Dance is joy!
Kathak
Kathak is one of the most revered classical dance forms of India. It combines mathematically precise footwork and fluid hand movements with vivid expressions and mesmerising twirls. Kathak is an ancient dance art form, and at Swastik Institute of Dance, we respect all associated values. For instance, guru-shishyaparampara (teacher-student tradition) is followed at the school and ghungroos (the dancing bells) are given the utmost respect. At Swastik, Kathak is taught to all levels of students – from beginners and intermediates to advanced dancers. From time to time, Swastik organises special workshops by renowned Kathak exponents from India, offering the students a rare opportunity to learn from the masters and purveyors of this traditional dance form.
Bollywood
Bollywood is one of the most colourful contemporary dance forms, performed to Bollywood movie tracks. It’s a blend of classical and folk Indian dance forms, but it is also influenced by contemporary Western dance styles such as hip-hop, jazz, salsa and R&B. With big, boisterous moves, it’s not only a highly entertaining performance art but a versatile full-body cardiovascular workout, too. At Swastik Institute of Dance, we offer Bollywood classes for everyone – from beginners and intermediate students to advanced dancers. Special choreographies are created for each class based on the students’ familiarity with the style. While the students’ comfort level is taken into consideration, we also like to push them a bit – which is one of the best ways for a dancer to grow.
Folk Dances
Think colourful costumes. Outrageous headgears. Boisterous moves. And, of course, foot-tapping beats. And you get Bhangra. One of India’s most popular and entertaining folk dances, this form is from Punjab, but has found widespread popularity all over the world – most notably in the UK, where its craze has even resulted in the birth of an eponymous music genre. Some of the dance instructors at Swastik are, in fact, from Punjab and they pride themselves on having learnt this style from the best in the industry. They teach Bhangra to all levels of students – from beginners and intermediates to advanced dancers. The dance is as popular among men as it is among women in India. In addition to Bhangra, we also teach Garbha, in the lead-up to Navratri every year.
